Overview

Nukumaru Shashin is a documentary family photographer based in Nagareyama, Chiba. The studio exists for a specific reason: mothers are almost always the one holding the camera, so they disappear from the family album. Motako photographs them back into it.

We redesigned the site so that idea is clear from the first screen, and so four different plans — everyday documentary, celebration days, Shichigosan, and sessions for other primary caregivers — can be compared without confusion.

The challenge

The studio's whole reason for existing is easy to miss in a single glance: a photographer whose point is to photograph the person who is usually absent from the album. That had to land immediately, before anyone looked at a single picture.

Four plans also overlapped in ways that were hard to tell apart — everyday sessions, celebration days, Shichigosan, and sessions for other primary caregivers.

Approach

We led with the message rather than the portfolio, so the reason for the studio arrives before the work does. The plans were then rewritten around the situation each one answers, not the format it takes, so a parent can find themselves in the list quickly.

Soft watercolour accents and generous space keep the tone close to the photography itself.
